Metabolic derangement in the context of Gestational Diabetes (GD)

Principal Investigator: Ana Megía Colet, MD, PhD

We are working in the study of epigenetic, metabolic, and environmental elements that determine the appearance of insulin resistance during the period of gestation. The generation of a prospective cohort and the analysis of biological samples collected from mothers and umbilical cord allow the design of studies on this topic with high translational character. At present, we are also focused on the study of various circulating adipokines and the lipolytic effects of some hormones on the apparition of insulin resistance in mothers. Studies focusing on the effects of DNA methylation and microRNA imbalance (epigenetics) in the appearance of GD, and the subsequent effect on the development of T2D mellitus, are also being conducted.
