Metabolic dysfunction as a trigger of adipose tissue derangement in obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Principal Investigator: Joan J. Vendrell Ortega, MD, PhD & Sonia Fernández-Veledo, PhD
Although it is know that adipose tissue has metabolic and inflammatory alterations in the context of obesity and insulin resistance, there is not a clear trigger at the beginning of these modifications when an energy imbalance takes place. The main objective of this line of research is to elucidate the role of different metabolites as main drivers of the adipocyte dysfunction that takes place in human adipose tissue in the setting of obesity and insulin resistance. In this sense glycogen and succinate are target molecules that are being intensively investigated by our group.
